Vocal Jazz Master Classes and Workshops

The singer's singer, the musicians's singer, and the audience's singer...she has studied the methods of the instrumentalists and knows her history, but her passion and communication are uniquely projected from her own experience. You can't get enough of this wonderful stuff.
PATTY COKER, singer, author of Vocal Improvisation, An Instrumental Approach
Janet Lawson is one of the finest jazz singers of our time. Her approach to music combines both the instrumentalist's concerns for sound and time with the vocalist's duty to communicate the meaning and message of a lyric...highly effective in private and clinical teaching environments.
DR TOM BORAS, associate professor, director of Jazz/Contemporary Music, NYU

...a wonderful jazz singer possessing originality and creativity...she teaches with love and dedication which is an extension of herself.
SHEILA JORDAN, Singer

VOCAL JAZZ
WORKSHOP
The Voice as an Improvisational Instrument

Vocalists, learn to sing freely, expressive of your feelings in your own style - improvisationally - whether you use lyrics or scat.

Workshops focus on the most basic aspects a singer needs - of mic technique, counting off a tune, writing lead sheets, choosing repertoire - to the later stages of picking instrumental sets on a gig.

Singers need to develop comfort and ease as a performer and skills as a musician so that your authentic artistry flows unimpeded by self doubts, harsh judgements and fears of making mistakes.

Improvisation offers the opportunity to learn how to:
  • take chances singing what you hear
  • appreciate how you hear
  • accept and enjoy the truth of the moment and trust the creative process
  • This experience serves as a great vehicle for that journey of self discovery singers can draw from to express your souls, and share with others from a real place within your true nature... transcending from self-imposed limitations to beyond the self... into pure artistry.
